The 10 Most Original Rock Songs of the 90s

Radiohead- OK Computer

There are plenty of songs out there that do some incredible things with pretty typical elements of music. The songs below accomplish the same, great results while using much more unorthodox methods. A lot of these songs are vastly different from the rest of the respective band's catalog (and almost any other songs out there) and thus tend to have some of the highest lasting appeal of any music out there.

1. Paranoid Android- Radiohead. The standard bearers for creativity obviously occupy the top slot. A lot of people compare this song to another very creative song, Bohemian Rhapsody. While I can see the reasoning behind it, I believe that comparing any song to Paranoid Android is pretty futile. It will never be unseated, it will never be rivaled.

2. Primitive Radio Gods- Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth with Money in My Hand. Perhaps the title should have given us a hint that this one was different. This is actually the song that inspired me to create this list. Like many people, I love to listen to music and compare it to other songs. Last week when this one came up on shuffle I realized that I couldn't think of any comparable songs. I literally cannot even think of any way to describe this music.

3. Roygbiv- Boards of Canada. It literally has become a pet project of mine to expose this band to as many people as possible. They basically single handedly got me into Electronica. Sort of like Radiohead, picking original songs by BoC is as easy as finding Nirvana ripoffs on mainstream rock radio. Roygbiv just happens to be my favorite.

4. Fastball- The Way. You'll notice that several of the songs on this list are One Hit Wonders. When a band creates a song so distinct, so different it's almost like career suicide. You'll almost certainly never top it. Perhaps it stands out even more in my mind because it is forever linked in my mind with a very memorable childhood vacation trip. Again, I just can't think of any similar songs.

5. Only Shallow- My Bloody Valentine. Any talk of originality must include a shoutout to Loveless, an album that gave birth to the very underrated and unfairly maligned genre of shoegaze. In fact, I would bet that many similar lists would have this song as number one. Only Shallow is a rare song where the fact you cannot understand a word that is being sung actually makes the song better.

6. Velvet Waltz- Built to Spill. Another band that it is literally criminal that more people do not know about. This lumbering beast of a song is enhanced with an underutilized cello and climactic tambourine and still marks the best live performance that I've been lucky enough to witness. A must download if it's not in your collection.

7. Everlong- Foo Fighters. Another similarity that many of these songs have is a very distinct and unusual intro. Almost from the first note of Everlong you know exactly what's coming. Listening to the Foo Fighters' 21st century tracks only works to enhance this odd magnum opus. They literally have not even come close to matching the creative levels they reached here.

8. Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm- Crash Test Dummies. Being one of the most prominent songs in Dumb and Dumber came as a blessing and curse for Crash Test Dummies. Being featured in what is, in my opinion, the best comedy of all-time had to be a major boon for the band. However, that the move cursed the song with such novelty status that people have never been able to legitimately appreciate it.

9. Naomi- Neutral Milk Hotel. Perhaps the third band on this list that a large portion of music listeners have not heard of. Neutral Milk Hotel is also a band that has a catalog that could single handedly fill up this top ten list. Naomi creates such distinct feelings audibly, lyrically and emotionally so as to force its way onto this list.

10. Jesus Christ Pose- Soundgarden. Along with Velvet Waltz, this is the second song on this list that I've heard live. It's also the only metal song on this list. Somehow, Soundgarden managed to increase the speed of an already frenetic and impossibly technical song by twofold when I heard it live.
